I\’ve been offered Josh Reddick for Starling Marte, John Axford and my 2nd round FA pick (essentially 24th round WW fodder). I have a ton of raw talent that I either need to consolidate through trades or risk losing to comply with the keeper policy.
Marte brings a nice speed/power combo but doesn\’t appear to ever hit for average and therefore a mediocre OPS. Reddick has CF eligibility, will at least hit for 25+ HR and has yet to enter his prime. The draft pick is essentially worthless as I would likely pass on 2nd & 3rd round pcks due to roster limitations.

I would not. Closers are very valuable and Reddick is extremely overrated in an OPS league. Sure, Marte isn’t going to be much better (won’t walk), but he’ll hit for average and moderate power. I also don’t buy Reddick hitting 30 HR in that ball park again.
I don’t completely hate the idea, but I’d definitely look in another direction. I wouldn’t characterize Reddick as a real “consolidate” guy for your roster. As JD mentions, I think Reddick is probably in for some strong regression in 2013. I’d rather have Marte and Axford – and heck, I think Marte is a better bet to hit for a high AVG than Reddick going forward. Jeff Zimmerman had a great article about Reddick’s flaws at fangraphs recently, and I think he may have even been a little optimistic. He’s very much a free swinger and things kind of need to break right for him to be hitting much over .250 or so in a normal year. Low AVGs tend to limit his usable power and I wouldn’t be shocked to see him never top 30 HRs again. He’s also very streaky, and from a fantasy owner perspective you’re really looking at a terrible park for HRs. Reddick is an ok option who exceeded expectations in 2012… but you’re overpaying here and I think your team would actually be worse off with Reddick than Starling and Axford.
I echo what JD and AL said. I just can’t buy Reddick as a 30 HR threat. His season screams career year and with the crowded A’s OF, I could see him losing playing time if he struggles early on. On the other hand, Axford is a guy I could see having a big bounce back year as his results didn’t seem to match with his peripherals last year.
Thanks for the comment, Billy. Have a happy new year
Considering your league uses Holds, Closers are not that valuable, as that close to triples the number of relievers that can add that ONE OTHER STAT. There are always electric RP arms popping up.
I am also not the hugest fan of Marte.
Reddick, on the other hand, is a beast. Fielding and Arm don’t matter (in most) fantasy leagues, but they do one thing, they get you in the lineup. Reddick also has another thing going for him: an organization that has a knack for acquiring undervalued/underestimated talent acquired him, and then WHADDAYA KNOW he looks like a beast. Maybe not in a 12 man league that starts 12 players, but in your league, he has considerable value.
You are also right, he’s not in his prime yet, and his power and plate presence will mature. Sometimes prospect evaluators get lost in projectability and lose sight of on thing: PRODUCTION.
No matter how much Reddick produced he was always less valued than Lars Anderson, Bryce Brentz, Ryan Lavarnway, etc, etc, etc….Reddick just kept on producing.
I love projectability too, but when it’s time to win and make a shot at the title, you need production.
Reddick has always been expected to regress…instead he goes out and produces with arguably the best combo of fielding/arm in all the OFs in the MLB…..especially when you include grit and hustle.
I either pull the trigger or try and squeeze another piece out of him.
Different sport but I heard a lot of people thinking Kaepernick wasn’t going to be good.

But Harbaugh, the “QB Guru” used a 2nd round pick on him…..hmmmmm…..
Just like MONEYBALL acquired Reddick….hmmmm……
I expect both will continue to produce
I know ya’ll are loving the CALI CONNECTION LoL
