Quick Hits: Thinkin About Dominic Smith
*Today, Steve Carter and myself offer up a double dose of quick hits giving our impressions of Serra High School’s Dominic Smith.
Steve Carter:
*Loud actions, hits off a rhythm and an unstable base.
*Good hand speed and change of direction, and hands enter the zone quickly.
*Kill zone is middle-in and elevated, can spin on a good FB. Going to need a good amount of work to smooth things out.
*Body is a presently a little soft, area of concern, weight could be problem.
*Scout told me he didn’t see him as a first round talent.
Steve Fiorindo:
*PG has him up to number 2 on their High School list. This feels high.
*I saw a Jonathan Singleton body comp on him, good call, I’ve used that one before too.
*Touches low 90′s as a pitcher, but haven’t seen that arm in the live looks I’ve had. Doesn’t really get extended on throws from the OF, and throws with stiff arm action. Looks more comfortable around the bag at 1B than he does in the outfield.
*Squares balls up consistently. Gets the barrel on the ball. Most of the power is to the pull side now.
*He’s hit everywhere lately, has owned the showcase circuit.
*Will be interesting to see how he adjusts to GOOD offspeed away. Most of the power to pull side, so better pitchers will work him away.
*I think both of us can see a developmental path similar to Singleton’s too. Arm strength will get him looks in the OF, but body will fill out and call 1b his long term home.

Not a 1st round talent? Wow that is harsh. Most people I’ve heard from say he is a lock for the 1st round and could be in the top 10.
Harh is a harsh word. . . that’s just one scouts opinion. I’ve heard top ten as well. Can understand the thought of being outside of the first if you think he’s destined for 1b. The offensive demand is huge for a team to select a kid as a 1b in the first round.
